Democracy Thrives When Citizens Take Ownership, Says Dumo Lulu-Briggs

As Nigerians commemorate 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, elder statesman and respected Rivers leader, Opuda (Alabo) Dumo Lulu-Briggs, has urged citizens to embrace democracy as a shared responsibility rather than a political entitlement.

In a message marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, Lulu-Briggs reflected on Nigeria’s democratic journey, paying tribute to the sacrifices of patriots whose struggles laid the foundation for the freedoms citizens enjoy today.

He noted that while democracy in Rivers State and Nigeria has delivered significant gains over the past two decades, it has also faced periods of uncertainty, disappointment, and intense political contestation.

According to him, the true strength of democracy lies not in its perfection but in its ability to give every citizen an equal stake in governance and nation-building.

“Democracy remains humanity’s most inclusive system of government because it gives every citizen a voice. Regardless of social status or occupation, each person has an equal opportunity to influence the future through participation,” he stated.

The Rivers leader emphasized that Democracy Day should serve as a moment of reflection on the enduring principle that sovereignty belongs to the people. He described Rivers State as a collective heritage that transcends ethnic, political, and sectional interests.

Lulu-Briggs recalled the vision of the state’s founding fathers, noting that their struggle for state creation was driven by the desire to secure freedom, representation, and opportunities for generations yet unborn.

“Our founding fathers envisioned a society where citizens could live in freedom, express themselves without intimidation, participate in elections without fear, and pursue their aspirations without unnecessary barriers,” he said.

Acknowledging the frustrations many residents feel amid present political and economic challenges, he cautioned against political apathy and disengagement, stressing that democratic progress can only be achieved through active citizenship.

“The answer to our challenges is not withdrawal from the democratic process but deeper participation. Democracy flourishes when citizens remain engaged, hold leaders accountable, and work collectively for the common good,” he noted.

He further called on Rivers people to safeguard the state’s unity and protect the legacy handed down by previous generations.

“Our forebears made immense sacrifices to secure this inheritance. It is our duty to preserve it, strengthen it, and pass it on to future generations stronger than we received it.”

Highlighting Rivers State’s strategic advantages, including its vast waterways, thriving blue economy potential, abundant natural resources, and energetic youth population, Lulu-Briggs said the state’s future remains bright if democratic institutions are strengthened and citizens are empowered to participate freely.

He maintained that democracy becomes meaningful only when people can choose their leaders without coercion, access information freely, and demand transparency from those entrusted with public office.

Calling for peaceful political engagement, he urged citizens to reject violence, intolerance, and divisive rhetoric, even in moments of disagreement.

“We may hold different opinions and belong to different political persuasions, but we must never allow our differences to undermine our shared destiny. Let us compete peacefully, disagree respectfully, and remain united in our commitment to the progress of Rivers State.”

Expressing confidence in the resilience of the state and its people, Lulu-Briggs said Rivers State possesses the human and economic resources required to overcome present difficulties and achieve greater prosperity.

“Rivers State has overcome challenges before, and it will overcome them again. With unity, responsible leadership, and active citizen participation, our best days are still ahead.”

He congratulated Rivers people and Nigerians on the occasion of Democracy Day and prayed for lasting peace, stability, and sustainable development across Rivers State and the nation.
